• Dartmouth is going for blooming gold

  GREEN-fingered Dartmouth is going for blooming gold – with a bit of help from some right royal secondhand planters which last saw action in London.
  The town’s bloom team bought up four super planters which had been used to put on a floral show around Buckingham Palace for last year’s royal diamond jubilee celebrations.
  They also snapped up half a dozen more which had been part of the nation’s floral show for the Olympic Village in London during last year’s Games.
  The first two were this week planted up to go on display on the riverfront – either side of the Boatfloat gates.
  The Dartmouth in Bloom team planted them out with geraniums, petunias, feverfew and bidens to give the town a colourful shot in the arm for this year’s Britain in Bloom contest.
  They will join the dozens of hanging baskets which are due to go out across the town in preparation for the judging which will decide whether Dartmouth can clock up a national award this year.
  The town has been winning major awards in the national bloom competition’s regional awards every year for the last 33 years.
  But this year it has been invited to take a shot at national fame by taking on other town across the UK in the coastal towns with a population up to 12,000 category.
